Questions to Ask When Writing a Magazine or Journal Article:
- Why do people read your magazine/journal? Is it industry news? To get new ideas? Purely for entertainment? Marketing strategies? Whatever the reason, there’s a way to write it that suits that purpose.
- What’s the hook? What is it about this article that makes them want to keep reading? How can you keep their attention past the headline, past the artwork, past the lead-in, and past the first couple of paragraphs to extract their value – and, often, to keep them flipping pages so they see the ads?
- Does it cater to the voice of the publication? Men’s Health has a completely different tone than Maxim, and both have a different tone than Scientific American, which has a different tone than the New England Journal of Medicine. An article must fit the magazine for it to make sense.
- Is it fun/easy to read? While this may be obvious for an entertainment/lifestyle rag, even a medical journal can be engaging and interesting to read.
